Changed passport validity requirement for travellers not subject to the visa requirement arriving in the Schengen area

The requirements concerning travel documents in the Schengen Borders Code have been amended and the changes are effective as of 19 July 2013. The passport of other travel document of travellers who are not subject to the Schengen visa requirement must remain valid until at least three months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen area. This obligation may be waived in a justified case of emergency.

The travel document must have been issued within the previous 10 years.

The change does not concern travellers holding a passport or other travel document issued by the EU or a Schengen country. Persons who have a valid residence permit in a Schengen country can also arrive in the area until the expiry of the passport.

Thanks to the amendment, the requirements concerning travel documents are consistent with the Schengen Visa Code.
