PISA seminar in Finland

FINLAND IN PISA-STUDIES - FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE RESULTS International Seminar 10-11 October, 2005 Marina Congress Center Katajanokanlaituri 6, Helsinki, Finland

Finland once again came out top in the OECD´s latest PISA study of learning results among 15-year olds, with high performances in mathematics, science, mother tongue and problem solving. Due to the wide international interest, the Finnish National Board of Education will organise seminars on the Finnish education system in relation to the background for Finnish PISA success.

Target group

Central stakeholders in education; policy makers and school management (state and local authorities and principals), representatives of teacher's unions and associations of principals, teacher trainers and researchers

Aim

To give the participants a brief but comprehensive insight into the Finnish education system, including teacher training and curriculum development. These are some of the crucial factors in paving the way to Finland's repeated success in the PISA surveys.

Content

The main issues presented at the conference are:
reasons behind the school reforms in Finland
the structure of the Finnish education system
governance and administration
curriculum development processes
(national core curricula/local and school based curricula)
teacher education
evaluation of learning results
school visits
